Gravel and Base Stone Calculator
Base under concrete, pavers, sheds and walkways. Free to use, with a short guide below.
What this calculator does
A strong surface starts below the surface. This calculator turns the length, width and depth of the base into cubic yards of gravel or base stone so you can order the right amount.
How to use it
- Measure the area of the walkway, patio, shed pad or driveway.
- Enter the depth of the compacted base. Walkways often use 4 to 6 in, driveways 8 to 12 in.
- Order a little more than the result, because compaction reduces the volume.
Why it matters
The base carries the load and drains the water. A thin or poorly compacted base is the main reason pavers sink and concrete cracks after one or two winters. Frost heave in Ontario makes a well drained base more important, not less.
Tips from the job site
- Use granular material that packs and drains. Dirt or loose sand alone does not.
- Compact in layers of about 4 in, not all at once.
- Slope the base slightly away from the house so water leaves.
These results are estimates. We measure on site before we quote, and we confirm local rules with your city.
