Topsoil and Mulch Calculator

Topsoil and Mulch Calculator

Garden beds, lawn top dressing and new soil. Free to use, with a short guide below.

What this calculator does

Find out how many cubic yards of topsoil, mulch or compost you need to cover a garden bed or lawn at a given depth.

How to use it

  1. Measure the area of the bed or lawn.
  2. Choose the depth. Mulch is usually 2 to 3 in, topsoil for a new lawn 4 to 6 in, and top dressing about half an inch.
  3. Order by the cubic yard for bulk delivery, or divide into bags.

Why it matters

Mulch keeps moisture in the soil and weeds down, and topsoil gives roots room to grow. Too thin and it does little good. Too thick and it can smother plants or rot against the house. The right depth saves money and keeps the beds healthy.

Tips from the job site

  • Keep mulch a few inches away from the house wall and tree trunks.
  • Level the soil before spreading and edge the bed for a clean line.
  • Order bulk when you need more than about one cubic yard. It costs less than bags.
