What this calculator does

Boxes of laminate, vinyl plank or engineered flooring from the room size, the waste and the coverage per box.

How to use it

1. Enter the room length and width.
2. Set the waste. 10% is common for a straight lay, and more for diagonal or patterned layouts.
3. Enter the coverage per box from the package.

Why it matters

Flooring boxes come from production batches with a slightly different shade. Buy everything in one order, plus a spare box for future repairs. In a basement, the moisture level of the slab and the expansion gap matter as much as the planks.

Tips from the job site

• Test the basement slab for moisture before choosing flooring.
• Let the planks rest in the room for 48 hours before installing.
• Leave an expansion gap along the walls and cover it with baseboard.
