3. Tick the ceiling if you are hanging it as well.

Why it matters

Drywall is fragile and heavy, so ordering the right count in one delivery saves trips and damage. In a basement, moisture resistant board and fire rated board around ducts and stairs may be required by the building code. The taping and sanding decide how good the finished room looks.

Tips from the job site

• Hang the ceiling first, then the walls.
• Stagger the joints and set the screws just below the paper surface.
• Allow three coats of compound with sanding between them.
